Story
If someone had told me when I married my wife on 27/08/22 that I wasn't going to grow old with her, I would have said don't be ridiculous.
On 07/08/23, my world collapsed when I heard the words 'your wife can't be cured'
Jodie has Metastatic Breast Cancer. This is stage 4 breast cancer (when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body).
When someone has breast cancer, it's awful and there are absolutely no 'good cancers', but there's hope, there's a cure, there's the prospect of a long happy life after cancer.
With metastatic breast cancer, this is not the case. It is treating whilst they can, and then when treatment lines run out, so does your time.
I watch my wife go in every 21 days to have chemotherapy, to give her another month, another week, another day, and every time she goes through this ordeal, the whole time we know, this won't be cured, this won't stop and one day, it will take her from us.
So myself, Kerri, and some friends are doing the 10k Gear run to raise money for a charity called METUPUK. This charity is a patient advocacy group in the UK run by volunteers focusing on Metastatic Breast Cancer. They are campaigning for awareness, access to drugs and treatments, access to clinical trials, and pushing policies to change for the better. Funding for metastatic breast cancer research falls far short of the amount allocated to primary breast cancer research.
Metastatic breast cancer is the 'darker side of pink', and the general population is largely unaware of it, and the people affected by it are a hidden population.
'A localised breast cancer will generally not take a life, metastatic breast cancer will inevitably take a life'
