Story

In May 2025 we tragically and unexpectedly lost our son, Jon at just 28, after collapsing during the Bristol half marathon. His untimely death is attributed to sudden adult death syndrome. Jon was in the prime of his life, extremely fit, playing rugby for a national league 2 side and loving his job with Red Bull F1 racing with which he travelled the world. He was a keen mountaineer and inspired all those around him to make the most of every minute with his energy, warmth and zest for life.

Jon truly was the brightest light. As we come to terms with our loss, 12 family and friends have decided to enter the Great North Run. This was Jon’s favourite half marathon in a place that he often said was the friendliest in the UK. We know that Jon would have been inspired by the Matt Hampson Foundation and the work that Matt and the team are doing to support young sports men and women to recover from serious injury. As we tackle our training we think about Jon’s attitude to keep us going - what would Jon do? He would go and do it. ❤️

The Get Busy Living Centre provides expert physiotherapy, specialist personal training, support, mentoring and advice to people suffering a life-changing injury through sport. It's a unique facility which opened its doors in 2018 and is the brainchild of founder and former England and Leicester Tigers rugby player Matt Hampson, who himself experienced a life-changing injury in 2005 leaving him paralysed from the neck down, aged just 20.

Building a sense of community is central to the Matt Hampson Foundation. In the aftermath of an incident which leads to a life-changing injury most people and their families feel isolated with an overwhelming sense of loss for what has been taken away from them.
