2026… Tom and James Turner run the Great North Run for Prostate Cancer UK; a tale of rivalry, resilience and the power of brotherhood.
Armed only with their determination, a healthy dose of competitiveness and a strong emotional backstory, these courageous brothers venture bravely to the cold north on a quest to spread messages of awareness, tribute and hope. As the valiant duo head forth on their voyage; two fraternal legs at a time, their patience tested, their tolerance pushed to it’s limits, their chance of never speaking again greatly increased, they will face challenges most bleak: sore legs, being a bit tired and chafe. With a matter of weeks to go, these particularly accident prone siblings will battle inevitable injury to reach the end, but what will come of this fable of legend…
OUR STORY:
November 2025 marked 10 years since losing our Dad. This has felt like a mammoth landmark for our family and one that hardly seems possible. After being diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2007, he spent the next 8 years fighting his grim prognosis. Endless chemotherapy, radiotherapy, procedures, trials and hormone treatments; things that gave us all precious time together as a family but that couldn't cure his cancer.
Since then, awareness, diagnosis and treatment have all improved: we know that early screening increases the chances of successful treatment, we have access to new treatments, research means that specialists have better understanding and clinical trials are being introduced in the UK. However, we are still a long way from scratching out the devastating statistics: around 57,000 new cases a year projected to increase by 14% over the coming years and leading to a potential 85,000 annual cases by 2038. Currently, there are over 12,000 deaths a year - 34 every day. BUT, the mortality rate IS predicted to fall if we carry on putting funds into research and, who knows, we might even find a cure.
Donations to charities such as Prostate Cancer UK really do make a direct difference to the future of men - any amount you can spare will be hugely appreciated. Please talk to your Dads, Grandads, Brothers, Sons, Uncles, Cousins and Nephews; if they are over 50, encourage them to request a routine screening through their GP (this can be done without a finger going anywhere taboo these days…)
Dad was 56 when he was diagnosed with no obvious signs of being unwell. An early diagnosis could have saved him.
Thank you all for your support. Please reach out if you would like to or need to.
Raise a glass and spare a thought for the man himself - Roy Turner.
Love,
Tom & James
