During lockdown the Williams Syndrome Foundation introduced a new way of supporting their adult members, and started hosting zoom calls 2 to 3 times a week, a safe and comfortable way of members being able to connect and support each other through this difficult time.
Throughout this time, we've gotten to know eachother well, and we've decided to do a group challenge to give back to the Foundation, so we've worked out the distance between the furthest south member on the calls to the furthers north member on the calls as 500 miles. And between us we're going to track our miles and walk the distance between Launceston, Cornwall to Edinburgh.
Williams Syndrome is a randomly occurring genetic disorder which affects around 1 in 18,000 people and can only be diagnosed by a genetic blood test. It is estimated, however, that only one in thirty GPs ever sees a patient with Williams Syndrome so it is vital that awareness of the condition is raised and that the quality of information and advice pertaining to the condition is guaranteed.
Williams Syndrome causes a plethora of medical, psychological, behavioural and educational problems. Whilst there is a spectrum of ability and potential, people with Williams Syndrome are not able to live without support.
This isn't going to be easy for some of the members, but they're so eager to do something to give back to the foundation and show how much they appreciate the support they're given by this small charity serving a unique and special population.
