Yorkshire 3 Peaks – 4 laps – 1 go
97m/155km & 20,500ft/6,800m ascent
11 & 12th July 2025
As a lot of people may know, I’ve been umming and ahhing about taking on this challenge for some time now, but never really getting it off the ground.
I have always wanted to complete something pretty big, and the idea peaked my interest when on a charity walk on the 22nd September 2018 in memory of a friend and ex-Scout member William Travis. I suggested the idea of a triple to my pal Rob Whitaker on that day, and the idea was firmly planted. Years went by when I kept palming it off: too much on, covid, injury etc, just excuses really.
It wasn’t until the start of 2024 when my Grandad was severely ill that the idea came back to the forefront of my mind. I decided to have a crack, initially finding a date and giving myself enough time was tough, but the triple idea was born.
However, things turned slightly, late into 2024 my Auntie passed away fairly suddenly in her old age, and soon after my Grandad. I had to do this now.
In January 2025 I completed the 45 mile Montane Spine Sprint race, although knackered from the event, I knew I could do it and therefore the date was set, just how many laps? I had a gander at the FKT website and found that a triple had already been done, which made me think, how about 100miles and make it 4, and there it was. Challenge accepted.
I have decided to dedicate each lap to a different charity that means something to me for a variety of reasons:
Bowel Cancer UK: Bowel Cancer was something my Grandad suffered with for a long period of his life, and eventually it got the better of him. It’s a charity that my Dad ran the London Marathon for back in 2015. It’s difficult to put into words what kind of man my Grandad was and as my uncle said in his eulogy “A Gentle man and Gentleman” is beyond fitting for his description. His unwavering support of myself and his knack for always delivering a small or large speech, are just a couple of things I’ll never forget. https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/
Breast Cancer: As mentioned above my Auntie passed away late in 2024, for parts of her life she suffered Breast Cancer and although passed away unexpectedly at the grand age of 91 it’s something I know she suffered with a great deal. A sport fanatic lady with a highly opinionated mind; raising money for a charity of this magnitude would be something she would be eternally grateful for. https://www.breastcanceruk.org.uk/
Headway: In July 2024, my close friend Pete Silvestre was cycling in Europe when his bike handling skills seemed to leave him and he suffered an horrendous crash. The aftermath was weeks in an induced coma in Toulouse, multiple operations on his back and neck, you name it, Pete had done a really good job of breaking himself! He was eventually brought round and able to travel back to the UK. He has spent a lot of time in Tooting hospital and has now moved back home with his fiancé, Eleanor. Pete’s diagnosis was that of a Traumatic Brain Injury. The lad has made great strides and is even back running, although his fiancé has point blank banned him from ever cycling again. Tough gig. Headway offered support to Pete’s fiancé and family since his accident, and it would be nice to give something back for their help. https://www.headway.org.uk/
Overgate Hospice: An introduction to Overgate Hospice will not be relevant for most people who read this. Overgate, a hospice based in Elland, Calderdale, UK has touched many people from the Halifax area, and I firmly believe not many people don’t know of someone who has been treated at the hospice. To help with the “Big Build” of their new hospice space, I thought it would be apt to send money their way. https://www.overgatehospice.org.uk/
A lot of people have asked to come along for a lap/laps/single peak already. If anyone else wishes to accompany me, please get in touch, the more the merrier! I’ll need a couple of pacers and mules to carry my water and food!
I hope to complete it in 32 hours, starting around 5am on Friday 11th July and finishing just after midday on Saturday 12th July.
Any amount you are able to sponsor would mean a great deal to me and to each charity. All monies raised will be split equally between each of them.
Many thanks – see you on the other side!
Will
