Story
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under 35 in the UK.
PAPYRUS is the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. It was founded in 1997 by a group of parents who had a lost a child through suicide: parents determined to do everything possible to save other families and young people from a similar fate. PAPYRUS provides practical help and advice to young people who feel they are not coping and to anyone - parent, sibling, grandparent, friend, teacher, carer, medical professional, work colleague - concerned that a young person may be at risk of killing themselves.
Suicide remains the main cause of death in young people – male and female – under 35 years of age. Every year in the UK between 600 and 800 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 take their own lives - a number equivalent to the population of a small secondary school. Under the age of 35, the number rises to over 1,600. That equates to around three to four per day.
As well as raising awareness of the danger signals, PAPYRUS produces resources to support young people who may be contemplating suicide as well as those dealing with people who are feeling severely stressed or suicidal.
We are all at computers all day long these days so getting out there and getting fresh air is important, not letting lockdown get you down! We'd like to ask everyone to join us in our Fitness Day on April 24th and walk (or run) 10K (or 15,000 steps) and try to raise £10k in memory of a dear friend of one of our Directors who took her own life so young, Sibel 'Sibby' Melin. All donations we raise will go to the charity Papyrus - Prevention of Young Suicide. ZeroDayLab will be donating prizes to the top person who raises the most donations; and also the person with the most steps on the day. These will be both internal for the company and external for friends so make sure to ask people to put your name as a reference when donating, or you can create your own Teams page that will link here to keep track of your personal supporters donations. You can use your phone to track steps/distances or a FitBit or cheaper option Letsfit. Just send us your pic at the end of the Fitness Day on the ZeroDayLab Facebook page of the steps or distance you have achieved on the day. For all of the friends that knew Sibby, so many of you contacted our director, Deborah for information about Sibby's tragedy, but there were no answers and so many of you couldn't go to her funeral or send flowers, but you can now donate in her name. You don't have to take part in the Fitness Day to show your support. Let's try to make a difference and let's do it for the memory of Sibby in support of her family and friends that loved her.
