Thanks for visiting our team fundraising page! We are the University of Edinburgh’s iGEM Team. iGEM is the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition that is held annually at MIT. iGEM encourages passionate students from around the world to conduct innovative synthetic biology research that will solve a contemporary issue. Our team this year is already hard at work on our exciting new project; a DNA Typewriter.
As an interdisciplinary team, with expertise ranging from biology and informatics to psychology, we have decided to tackle an issue that affects the lives of everyone; data storage! We are living in the age of big data; our lives revolve around Twitter, Facebook and our smart devices. By 2040, in order to store all of our generated data, we will need to manufacture hard drives eighteen times the size of London. Alternatively, a pocket-sized vial of DNA can store the exact same amount – with room to spare!
Our team knows that DNA is the future of data storage. We have designed a modular, sustainable and affordable method for storing and assembling text messages in DNA. Not only are we solving current data storage problems, but we are making sure that our technology is accessible to everyone. All we need now is a little bit of help!
We are currently raising money to cover our lab costs and travel expenses for our final presentation at MIT. To help us reach our goal, please donate to any of our team members listed below! We appreciate your support!
