A stroke is a sudden brain attack that has immediate effect and can damage the mind and body. Recovery generally takes a very long time. About one third of people make a significant recovery within a month, but most stroke survivors struggle with long-term problems.
Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. That's one person every five minutes. Most people affected are over 65, but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies.
We know from experience the profound and lasting effect a stroke can have on victims and their families. The Stroke Association provides practical, emotional and financial support for survivors and their loved ones. They are also at the forefront of research on stroke prevention and recovery.
