Funding Neuro funds research focused on solving the problems which affect the progress towards cures and effective treatments for all conditions which affect the brain and spinal column. In other words, they are funding the research which they believe will cure many neurological disorders.
They are focusing on reliable methods of delivering the drugs required through the blood brain barrier to where they will do most good. The major issue facing the people who are developing drugs to be used in the treatment of neurological disorders, is the blood-brain barrier. The blood-brain barrier is a protective wall around the brain. Nothing gets past it if the brain is in the least bit suspicious. Man-made drugs are something the brain is very suspicious of.
Over the last 3 years, Funding Neuro have been funding research involving the use of a catheter-based system which pierces the blood brain barrier and carries the medication to exactly where it is required…safely, reliably and repeatedly. The catheter-based system delivers a growth factor for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, and to date they have raised over £700,000 towards the cost of trials using that system. This system can also be used in the treatment of brain tumours in children and young adults, delivering chemotherapy directly into the tumour. So in 2014, Funding Neuro are aiming to raise £250,000 to kick-start these trials.
