The Clemency's Legacy Marathon team has pledged to raise money for Tommy's, the Baby Charity. Here's why...
In August 2012, William and Louise went into hospital for the birth of their first child, to be called Clemency.
At the onset of labour, Clemency was alive and healthy. A couple of hours later, she was dead.
Her death was needless - there was nothing wrong with her. Had a few simple things been done differently, or done at all, she would have lived.
Every year in Britain, thousands of parents face this agony. In the developed world, the UK has the third worst record for losing babies in the womb or during delivery. Widely referred to as 'stillbirth' (technically neo- and peri-natal death), it is a national scandal. Some are caused by nature, other by poor medical practice. Just as shocking are the number of near-misses that go unrecorded.
Over 4000 babies are lost every year.
Tommy's, the baby charity exists not only to research the causes of premature birth, death and miscarriage, but also to apply political pressure to change the out-dated and dysfunctional system that has been allowed to operate in Britain for far too long.
Clemency's Legacy was formed by William and Louise to help change Britain from being one of the worst to being one of the best places to have a baby.
All funds raised by the marathon team go directly to Tommy's to fund their world-leading work. See www.tommys.org
We WILL make a difference.
Thank you for your support. It may mean someone, somewhere, is holding a crying baby, not a dead one.
