In September 2014 we are taking up the oars/paddles and life jackets following the paddle strokes of the celebrities of the BT Red Nose Hell and High Water Challenge making our way over 100kms down one of the toughest rivers in Africa - the mighty Zambezi!
We are raising money for the Pearcecroft Charitable Trust which supports injured players at Stratford upon Avon RFC.
‘On 15th January 2011 Gareth Rees, a second row forward for Stratford-Upon-Avon Rugby Club was paralysed whilst playing for the Club against Old Halesonians. It was immediately apparent that the injury was a serious one and Gareth was airlifted from the pitch. Following a long period of recovery in the QE Hospital in Birmingham, Gareth was transferred to Stoke Mandeville Specialist Spinal Hospital for rehabilitation. Gareth has severed the C3 vertebra in his neck and is paralysed from the chest down. It is unlikely that there will be significant improvement in his condition. It is anticipated that Gareth will be released from Stoke Mandeville later this year. Gareth is 28years old.
This is, however, only half of the story. Gareth is determined that his life will not be defined by what happened in January and is looking forward to getting back into the community, he has now moved into his own home, however, he requires24 hour supervision and assistance. An injury such as Gareth has suffered is the one all rugby players fear the most. Gareth's reaction to it has been absolutely inspiring. His determination is unbelievable. He has not asked for sympathy.
If we can hit £7,000 by 1st April we will have our heads shaved! If not we will go through the humiliation of having our hair dyed pink!
