Jack and Jamie's appeal:
On the 21st of May 2016 we will be embarking on a 1,051 kilometre walk from The Royal Society in London to the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille (on the southern coast of France) to raise money for two charities - The CUP Foundation and The Township Initiative. We'll be arriving in Marseille on the 11th of June - the morning of England’s opening EURO 2016 game against Russia in the city of Marseille after a 21 day walk.
We are two first year University of Edinburgh students from London. Our objective is to raise £10,000 pounds, split between our two chosen charities.
The CUP Foundation is an organisation that focuses of the research of cancer of unknown primary and the treatment of those affected by it. Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a form of cancer that has an untraceable origin and is therefore more difficult to treat. The CUP Foundation does unbelievable work in an area of cancer that is recognised as being under-researched given how often it is diagnosed: 1 in 20 new cancer diagnoses in the UK are cases of CUP.
The Township Initiative is a registered charity founded and run by Jamie. Townships are often undeveloped urban areas of South Africa, home to 11 million people across the country. The lack of education afforded to those in the township's is devastating - 2/3rds of those that don't recieve education end up in poverty compared with just five percent of those receive some form of higher education. Nelson Mandela stated that "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". We believe that education empowers. The very real danger is that a generation will be lost to poverty because they have not had the type of oppertunity granted only by an education. The Township Initiative plans to support education to change lives - giving children the chance to go to school. Founded in 2014, the money raised will allow the Township Initiative to put into place the plans that will take children in the Cape township of Khayelitsha off the streets and into school.
Using England’s match against Russia as an incentive to reach Marseille by the 11th of June, we are walking (ticketless!) an average of 58km a day to support our two charities and make a contribution to two incredibly worthy causes.
