The Event A Team from Highgrove Marathon Swimmers in Record Swim for Charity Fiftteen swimmers from Highgrove Marathon Swimmers (HMS), ably assisted by eight lap counters, successfully completed their endurance swim at the Highgrove Pool in Eastcote Road in Ruislip on Sunday morning 25 March to raise money for two local charities. The aim of this event was for team members to collectively swim a minimum marathon distance and to raise in excess of £8000 in support of The Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC) and Michael Sobell Hospice (MSH), both cancer charities situated at Mount Vernon Hospital. With the kind co-operation of Highgrove Pool, two lanes were made available to the swimmers for three hours. The swim was a great success. All the swimmers, whose ages ranged from 20 something to 70 plus, exceeded their target number of laps resulting in a record combined distance of 38.9 miles, equivalent to 1,867 lengths of the pool, being achieved. The photographs show swimmers and helpers before the swim and relaxing afterwards. Commenting on the result, team member Bob Finch said “This was a great team effort by swimmers and helpers alike. Not only did we comfortably exceed the marathon distance, we also beat the total of 37 miles achieved by a larger number of swimmers when the event was held in 2010. I would like to take the opportunity of thanking everyone for taking part and the staff at Highgrove for their cooperation in making the event such a success.
