Superheroes Saving Sight

Team photo

For our 10th Anniversary, we're teaming up with Sightsavers, the UK-registered international charity which does truly inspirational work funding and supporting the medical treatment required to save the sight of countless adults and children, particularly in the world's poorest countries. Out of 39 million blind people in the world, around 90% live in such countries and 80% of their blindness can be prevented or cured. Sightsavers works with partners to tackle these avoidable causes of blindness, including cataract, river blindness and trachoma. These three eye conditions alone inflict blindness on huge numbers of people every year, and yet all are entirely treatable, as long as the right treatment is made available when and where it's needed.

We pledged that, for EACH AND EVERY Traveleyes trip booked between 15th April 2014 and 14th April 2015, Traveleyes will donate to Sightsavers the funding required to restore eyesight to a child or an adult with trachoma. This means that every booking made during this period will restore someone's sight!

What’s more, on 2nd May 2015 we are holding the 10th Anniversary Traveleyes Ball. Through this event we hope to bring our community together in order to help us raise that much more. Not only does every ticket purchased result in a donation to Sightsavers but we aim to raise even more on the night through a raffle and auction.

But we want to go even further! Could you overcome the fear of heights and conquer The Royal Armouries?

We're sending out a call for you to join us and help us boost the sum that we have already raised for Sightsavers by undertaking our 'Superheroes Saving Sight' abseil down one of Leeds' most iconic buildings, The Royal Armouries! Throughout the day on 2nd May 2015, we'll be encouraging as many people as possible to cross the parapet and descend the front wall of the Armouries building. We'd just love you to throw yourself head-first into our challenge!

Members of the Traveleyes Team will be taking part too and they'll even be dressing for the occasion in superhero costumes. As a team, we will be raising donations together through this page, so, as a little inspiration and to help you loosen those purse strings, below is a sentence by each member of the team which has accepted the challenge.

Amar - 'Batman is ready for action - please get your 'bat-bucks' out, Batman is on a mission and he urgently needs your support to save sight across the world!'

Hannah - In-keeping with the Traveleyes spirit of inclusivity, I'm forcibly taking part in throwing myself off the side of a building for our 10th Anniversary celebrations along with the rest of the Traveleyes team and anyone else who dares! What's more horrific, we will all be donning our lycras with our superhero abseil theme...but it's all in the name of charity! So please, help us save someone's sight and donate for this worthy cause.

Liam - For when Liam eats a banana, an amazing transformation occurs. Liam is Bananaman. Every alert for the call to action, he's ready to save peoples sight!

Lisa - What better way to conquer my terrifying fear of heights than throwing myself off the Royal Armouries! Every donation given will make it more and more worthwhile - and less scary, hopefully!

Sam - As a real superhero...SuperSam, I need to show these wannabes how it's really done! I will prove my other super senses by abseiling blindfolded, in my legendary skimpy tights. If that's not worth donating for, what is?

Christina - So it seems I've been roped (!) into an abseil down the Royal Armouries by the rest of the Traveleyes team - what's more I'm going to do it blindfolded! It's all for a great cause so any sponsorships would be much appreciated!

Jack - Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, its a quivering wreck of a man, blindfolded, dressed in tight lycra, clinging to the side of a building. If that sounds like good Saturday morning entertainment then please donate and help make the pedestrians of Leeds day!

If the above from our team spurs you on, then please please click the donate button next to the Superheroes Saving Sight Traveleyes page below. Or the button next to whomever from our team members below that you would like to sponsor - and help us all raise as much as we can for a fantastic cause.

Or, why not throw on a cape of your own and join the fun? For those of you who are sighted, you could even go that step further and test your superhero nerve and sport a blindfold for your descent?
