Story

Thank you for visiting the Rack Pack's Just Giving page. Let us explain our motivation and inspiration behind our fund raising mission:

Luci and Adam

Eight years ago I lost my amazing Mum to her battle against breast cancer. She received the best possible treatments, with marvellous care from various support systems, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. All parents are invincible in the eyes of their children, and to find out that they aren’t – no matter how hard they fight to be for our sakes – is…well, it’s beyond heartbreaking. So, mine and Ad’s aim is to keep raising as much money and awareness about breast cancer so that no other daughter or son has to find this out the hard way. And, most importantly, so that no man or woman has to suffer with this awful disease without the best possible emotional and medical support in place.

Lexi

Every time you hear of someone having cancer, you always think it will never happen to you or someone you know. This had always been the case for me until my Mum, my best friend, was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. There is no history of cancer in my family, my Mum had no symptoms and she had simply gone for a routine mammogram. It was this crucial check-up that detected the beginning stages of a fast growing cancer. The following months were the most devastating time of my life, let alone my Mum’s. She completed her treatments in December 2010 and still has a year and a half to go until she is in remission, so every check-up is a petrifying reminder of an extremely distressing period for all my family. My aim is to continue raising awareness and to help raise as much money as possible to fight this disease. It is so important for women (and men) to go to their mammograms and have regular checks.

…So basically, Mum’s the word!

Breast Cancer Care wants every person affected by breast cancer to get the best treatment, information and support possible – combining personal experiences with clinical expertise to undertake this task. They offer emotional and practical support, campaign for the improvement of standards in support and care, and promote the importance of early detection. It is their passion for education and empowerment of those suffering from this horrible disease that drove us to take part in this charity walk!

On Saturday 17 May, the three of us will be walking/staggering/crawling for about seven/eight hours around a 20 mile route, starting and ending at Hampton Court Palace. To put this in context, it’s the same as us walking from Elberts in Hertford to the girls’ flat in Haggerston.  Now that’s a drunken walk home we’d like to see!

As a lot of you will know, we aren’t exactly the 20 mile trekker types, so the first port of call….buy Lexi some trainers!!

Just as a little inspiration…here’s how EVERY penny can help:

£2           Provides a headscarf for a woman who has lost her hair during treatment

£5           Provides an easy-to-understand info pack for someone newly diagnosed with breast cancer

£10         Teaches someone how to be breast aware for life at a local workshop

£25         Trains and supports a member of our Nursing Network for a year to help improve the care of people with breast cancer

This cause is so important to us and we would appreciate you giving as much or as little as you are able to.

Love from the Rack Pack xxx
