The Channel Swim Relay 2013 · 27 August 2013

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am part of a relay swim team who will be swimming the Channel (21 miles being the shortest possible distance) in late August next year.

Spinal injuries are very close to the heart for me with both my Dad and sister being affected. They are actually very lucky as although they have had severe back injuries they are not paralysed. However there are 40,000 people living with spinal cord injury in the UK who have not been so lucky, these are the people who Aspire (http://www.aspire.org.uk/) support.

So please dig deep and donate now as I’m doing something rather special. I’m swimming the channel without a wetsuit and there is a great deal of training which needs to be done involving some very cold water.

Channel Swim Info

· There are 6 of us on the team; we each swim an hour in turn until we reach France. We have to stay in the swim order we are put into and no one can skip a turn.

· The shortest distance to France is 21 miles (32km) but due to tides, weather and shipping it is often further.

· The fastest swim is a little over 7 hours and the slowest nearly 27 hours.

· A huge part of the challenge is the cold…it is expected to be 14-16 degrees Celsius but this is weather dependant and we will not be wearing wetsuits.
