Story
Thank you for visiting the Paul Southgate Research Fund page.
Paul loved life! Paul travelled extensively, had a successful career in the City and had many friends and contacts throughout the world. Paul was a real family man and thought the world of his two children. He was a single figure golfer, had a private pilot's licence, followed Formula One racing avidly and rode a Ducati motorbike. Then in November 2004 he was diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer and everything changed. He underwent surgery and gruelling chemo/radiotheraphy and hoped he had beaten it.
However, in June 2006, Paul found the cancer had spread to his lungs and the prognosis was terminal. He and his family were devastated but he was determined to fight on. He was a true inspiration to everyone around him and with his typical single minded attitude he set about trying to conquer this disease. Paul was fortunate to meet the team at the UCL Cancer Instiute who oversaw the rest of his treatment. Paul tried everything including new treatments. His readiness to trial new drugs will help advance the research into them at UCL.
Sadly on 19th June 2008, two years on from when Paul was given 3-9 months to live, he lost the battle against cancer.
Paul's family are determined his death won't be in vain. We've founded the Paul Southgate Research Fund in his memory to raise funds for research into Head and Neck Cancer at UCL's Cancer Institute, where Paul was treated. The Institute houses world class scientists who are leading research into head and neck cancer, which are some of the most poorly studied and under funded cancers.
We want to raise £1m to help defeat cancer and enable others to live. Every donation counts, at whatever level. Please support us, and Paul, in any way you can - by making a donation now to this page; by holding a fundraising event such a quiz or a dinner; by running for the Fund in a event like a 10k race or Marathon; or by adopting the Fund as a beneficiary of any other type of fundraising you, your workplace or school are involved with.
