Three Tarn Challenge · 3 September 2011
UPDATE
We successfully reached both Melynllyn and Loch Callater, unfortunately we were advised not to attempt Red Tarn by Mountain Rescue. This was due to high winds that were the remanents of 2 US hurricanes hitting the Lake DIstrict with winds on the peaks between 70-100mph.
Red Tarn will be completed in 2012 and we will update the page once it has been ticked off.
In the meantime here is a video of the first leg; Melynllyn

Our Record Breaking attempt
Following last years successful Burnmoor Tarn trek in aid of Help 4 Heroes (See http://anglersafloat.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=catchreports&thread=12424&page=1 ) we have decided to raise the bar for 2011. We will be pulling fishing kayaks up UK mountains and fishing 3 remote tarns. Including the highest fishable water in the UK. It all starts on September the 3rd for around 10 days.
This year instead of dragging the fishing kayaks to a mountain tarn just over 900ft we will take the kayaks to well over 2,000ft.
Theres more......Just to make it really challenging we are going to increase the number of tarns visited from one to three!! To make it a true GB challenge we will be tackling a tarn in Wales (Snowdonia) Mellyn Llyn at over 2,100ft; England (Lake District) Red Tarn, (Hellvelyn) at 2,330ft and Scotland, Loch Callater in the Grampians. I know....Loch Callater is only a mere 1,640ft but it does have the highest confirmed population of Pike in the UK.
Just to put the effort required into perspective. Red Tarn is the highest water to hold a confirmed population of fish in the UK. This leg will set a new kayak angling altitude record. We estimate Red Tarn will take an entire day to climb. The whole event is the equivalent to towing a kayak from the sea to the top of Ben Nevis over rocks and through mud. Not to mention the 50lb pack of camping equipment etc
Last year we did say "never again" and I have no doubt we will again this year. However, with all the support and good wishes we recieved it would be rude not to do something that bit more testing and deserving. With similar support, who knows what might tempt us in 2012......... I hear the fishing in the Andes can be pretty good.
Seriously, we have set this challenge to help earn your donation for Help 4 Heroes. Please give what you can, I know times are hard but it is even harder for our injured service men and women.
Response to date has been both awe inspiring and humbling, thanks to everyone.
Special thanks go to Ocean Kayak for their Venus kayaks and the all important kayak C-Tug trolleys.
To Dolgarrog Fishing Club for granting permission for Mellyn Llyn and a very large donation. You are stars.
To Invercauld Estate for granting permission for Loch Callater.
To the Helvellyn YHA who have solved our car parking issues for the Red Tarn stage.
Above all else thanks to everyone who has donated.
Thanks from the Team, Paul & Martin
