Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

As some of you know, in 2000 I was diagnosed with an acute form of myloid leukaemia. After a year of treatment, the cancer returned and my chances of survival were very low. However, the Anthony Nolan Trust found me an unrelated bone-marrow donor. I have never met the person who provided some of his marrow, but I now have his blood system. I even have his red-blood type.

The Nolan trust is essentially a register of people willing to donate bone marrow, and provides support for donors as well as those affected by the disease. I still remember vividly the day that a woman turned up at the room where I was being treated atUniversityCollegeHospitalwith a plastic bag of my donor’s marrow. She had raced there from The Royal Free in Hampstead. She commented that it was still warm!

Recovering from the transplant was a long process. However, I have been able to return to work, and to carry out research inAfrica. In 2004 I was able to go back to the places where I did my first field-research back in the early 80s. Also, in 2005, 2007 and 2008 my family joined me for prolonged research trips to Uganda and Tanzania.

I am going to run in the London Marathon later this month to raise money for the Nolan Trust. I am hoping to raise £2,000. Could you please sponsor me – even if it is only for a small sum?

The best way of doing it is by going to this site.

Here is a picture of me running the 2006 marathon in the horrid running top that the Nolan Trust insists I wear. It is at the end of the race, and I had been told that there was a camera there, so that I should try to look like I was having a good time. What gives it away is that although I look like I am running fast, the people around me look like they are about to collapse.

So could you please sponsor me? All the money will go to the Nolan Trust - which I know from my own experiences, can make the difference between life and death.

Many many thanks,
Tim
