Story

A man who can only be described as the most kind, wonderful and gentle being you’d ever meet, Tom Newton lived a truly colourful life with stories you could listen to for hours on end.

Tom died on Sunday the 13th of December in the early hours from covid pneumonia, shortly after spending comforting moments with his granddaughter Kerry who was able to visit 3 times during his end of life care at the Cumberland Infirmary.

Although his family & friend’s hearts are broken with the loss of Tom, he spent over 87 years on this Earth making a difference to so many lives. He could turn his hands to many things, which led to him having a varied life; Gamekeeper, Diver, Special Constable, Judo Instructor and Wildlife Conservationist & Ranger to list a few. He travelled the world independently, meeting groups of people to explore the most incredible places such as the Artic Circle, China & Singapore which were some of his fondest times.

Many will remember Tom due to his passion and dedication for wildlife, regularly called upon by friends, neighbours and strangers for advice on the best walking routes, how to care for an injured bird they’d found or when he was more able to join them on days out up the fells or looking for squirrels, otters and deer. This is why his family have chosen to support The Wildlife Trusts in his memory, so he can help others enjoy the pleasures of natural spaces and life just as he did.

We thought we would share some of Tom’s final words he exchanged with his granddaughter whilst holding her hand to bring comfort to all grieving the loss of this wonderful man; Please don’t be sad for me, be happy. I’m ready to go and I’m not frightened. I’ve had a good innings, seen the most wonderful things and met such lovely people. I just hope I’ve meant something to you all” in which she replied, “you really do and I don’t think you’ll never truly know just how much”.

Thank you for the love and support to our family at this difficult time.
