We’ve bought the route maps. We’ve booked the time off work. We’ve watered the houseplants. Yes, it’s actually happening. This June, July and August we’ll be cycling across America coast to coast, east to west. All 3,600+ miles of it. That’s 5,800 kilometres. That’s the equivalent of over fifteen thousand Empire State Buildings laid down next to each other. Or three million George Washingtons. We’re giving ourselves 90 days to do it, mostly because we’ll get kicked out if we stay any longer. It’ll work out as an average of 50 miles a day, which sounds like a lot but actually, well yes, it is a lot. But how hard can crossing America be, really. Lewis and Clark managed it and they didn’t even have bicycles.

This is an opportunity to take ourselves out of our comfort zones a bit and take on a big challenge, and if we can raise some money for a good cause while doing it then all the better. And what better time to do the trip of a lifetime than in the middle of a pandemic.

We’ve chosen the Multiple Sclerosis Society because Steve’s mum was diagnosed with MS in 1999 and lived with the condition for the last ten years of her life, the fatigue and mobility problems gradually slowing her down and making it harder for her to do the things she loved doing. She would have been very happy to know that we’re making the most of our health while we have it.
