Liverpool Triathlon · 11 April 2009
About 3 years ago I had a motorbike accident where I broke my back (among other things) and sustained a spinal cord injury that left me as a paraplegic and therefore a wheelchair user.
When you get an injury like this the implications extend further than the fact you will be using wheels instead of your legs from now on. Your lifestyle is completely turned upside down and what could have been the simplest thing before your accident can now be very difficult. Back Up is a charity that has been set up to help people with spinal cord injuries, this comes in the form of confidence boosts from things like developing wheelchair skills to skydives!!
Back Up has helped me out a lot in terms of lifting my confidence right back up and I now teach wheelchair skills for them in spinal units and on the summer activity courses. Its a really great charity that I recommend to everyone with spinal cord injury.
I have been asked to do the Liverpool triathlon this year for Back Up which takes place on the 21st June. I have decided to do the sprint triathlon which consists of:
Swim - 750m
Cycle - 20km
Sprint - 5m
These are some hefty distances but I'm confident that when the time comes I'll be in a physical condition capable of completing the event.
Because I can't use my legs I'll be swimming with just my arms, I will be using a hand cycle that Cyclone are kindly lending me and I will be using a racing chair for the sprint.
This is a charity that really deserves our support for the help that they give to people with spinal cord injuries. I have set the target at £750 so please help me get there, every little helps!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Back-Up Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
