The Surrey Golf Marathon
Running September to October 2010 Get ‘a round’ to help your local Urology department This year the aim of Golf Marathon is to raise money to support the advancement of urological care at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals and through the medical education programmes and scientific research programmes implemented by The Urology Foundation. We hope to support several new services including a laser to treat kidney stones and certain types of kidney cancer, access to new “one stop clinics” and the safe and effective introduction of robotically assisted surgery as a treatment option for prostate and bladder cancer. Next year we plan to use the format of Golf Marathon to raise money for urological departments throughout the UK. More and more the NHS is turning to the generosity of local communities to help support new services but we believe this is a very worthwhile gesture. Together we can advance the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with urological diseases. Sponsor a urologist on his personal golf marathon This year the Prostate Cancer Awareness Week runs from September 19-25th. During this week Justin Collins a consultant urologist at Ashford and St Peters will attempt to play 4 rounds of golf per day for 7 days. This will equate to 504 holes in one week. This will require early morning starts at 5:30am. The average round of golf is 5 miles so this will need Justin to walk 20 miles per day and 140 miles in one week, a true golf marathon! Golfers This year Ashford and St Peters working with ‘The Urology Foundation’ is asking golfers to choose a day in September or October for their own personal ‘golf marathon’ at their local club. Individuals may play 9 or 18 holes or as many as they can fit into one day and we want them to collect sponsorship per hole from friends and family. We are hoping that each golfer participating will raise a minimum of £36 i.e. £2 per hole. Every entry will be automatically entered into a prize draw and prizes will include playing a round of golf with a celebrity or a sports personality. Ronnie Corbett headlines a star list of celebrities that is increasing all the time. For the latest update on who is participating go to http://www.golfmarathon.co.uk/ There are 108 golf clubs registered in Surrey and if we could achieve just one four ball on each golf club every day of September and October and each golfer raised £36 that would equate to just under £950,000!Charities pay a small fee for our service.
