Canalathon 75km · 26 March 2017

When a child is diagnosed with a heart problem it is a difficult time for the whole family. The Children’s Heart Association would like to help. We hold support meetings across the area; provide equipment and toys for our wards and clinics; and work closely with your cardiac team.

Story

On Sunday I'll be hoping to complete my sixth ultramarathon, the 75km Canalathon. I'd like to use this opportunity to raise money for the Children's Heart Association. We recently found out that this year Mia will be facing her fourth heart operation. After this year she will transition to the adult cardiology service, so I'd like to say a big thank you to the Children's Heart Association who have been so helpful to us throughout the last 15 years :) I ran my first ever marathon for CHA, in 2005. Who would have thought it would lead to twelve marathons and six ultramarathons..! (And counting..)

Mia was born with complex heart defects: ccTGA (pumping chambers / arteries on wrong sides), VSD (hole between the ventricles), ASD (hole between atria), dextrocardia (heart on wrong side of body), pulmonary atresia and stenosis (pulmonary valve didn't form, pulmonary artery narrowed). She has had several surgeries and interventions. In spite of all this she has gone on to achieve her bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards, involving several days of hiking! Mia has also been climbing for years and has attained several climbing grades. I'm so proud of her.
