Story

Rama has a deep-seated thirst for learning and an insatiable curiosity about not only everything she encounters, but also the world beyond her own.

Listen to what Rama has to say here: https://youtu.be/lMqmLci1tz

Through a competitive selection process in Lebanon, Rama was one of the few students selected for a place at UWC.

She is hungry for an educational system that nurtures her inner philosopher and develops her critical thinking. She has acquired and honed her leadership skills through her scout group in Lebanon, and is passionate about valuing and protecting the natural environment. She knows how to solicit support in new and challenging situations and is able to bring out the best in people even when she doesn't see eye-to-eye with them, making sure that all those in her group feel engaged and useful. At the same time, she is an idealist and unusually mature for her age, aspiring to be a citizen of a world without boundaries.

UWC Atlantic has committed to providing Rama with a 50% scholarship of the two-year 66,000 GBP cost, and an anonymous alumni donor has generously given 10,000 Euros towards the remaining costs.

To help us rise to this challenge, we are reaching out to all those who are able to invest in the future of exceptional Lebanese youth, starting with Rama and contribute to our scholarship fund.

Current Situation in Lebanon

Due to the actual dire economic situation in Lebanon, it is almost impossible for our students and their families to raise funds locally to contribute to their scholarship funds. Here is what has happened and is happening in Lebanon:

  • A revolution started in October 2019 with the aim of removing the corrupt political class controlling the banking system and placing arbitrary capital controls on citizen’s savings.

  • The spread of Covid-19 shut down schools and left many without access to in-person and online education because of abysmal internet infrastructure. As a result, students have largely been deprived of a year and a half of education.

  • The largest non-nuclear explosion in history devastated the Beirut Port in August 2020 and destroyed over 163 schools.

  • The Lebanese currency has lost more than 90% of its value, which has left the majority of families with little to no income or reserve funds.

In just under two years, Lebanese have found themselves reduced to just trying to survive, with the country’s youth facing a very uncertain future.

UWC offers a chance to a handful of the best and brightest Lebanese youth an extraordinary opportunity of education and personal growth on a world stage, and takes them on a transformational journey.

What is UWC?

“Central to the ethos of UWC is the belief that education can bring together young people from all backgrounds on the basis of their shared humanity, to engage with the possibility of social change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership. To achieve this, UWC schools and colleges all over the world deliver a challenging and transformational educational experience to a deliberately diverse group of young people, inspiring them to become agents of positive change in line with UWC’s core values”
