1 Million Step Challenge 2018 · 30 September 2018 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. You can donate from as little as a pound! I have Type 1 Diabetes, which is an Autoimmune condition. People with Type 1 Diabetes have a daily battle to stabilise their blood sugar levels. This involves finger prick blood testing before eating and injecting Insulin every time you eat. You also have to count every single carbohydrate and work out the correct Insulin dosage to inject. If you get this wrong, your levels can either go to a dangerously high level (Hyper) or drop to a dangerously low level (Hypo). A person with Type 1 Diabetes therefore has to give themselves at least 5-6 blood tests per day (more than that if you drive or if you have a hypo) and at least 4-6 injections every day. You also have to test your blood at bedtime to make sure you're safe to go to sleep.
Each week thousands of people in the UK suffer heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, amputation and blindness because of their diabetes. But when people manage their diabetes well they can avoid these life-threatening complications and stay healthy.
Diabetes UK provides information, care and support for everyone with diabetes so they can manage their condition well. Their campaigns improve life for people with diabetes while their research develops new treatments, technologies and will, one day, find a cure.
I am taking part in the Million Steps challenge to raise money for Diabetes UK. This is particularly challenging for someone with Type 1 Diabetes, as exercise affects your blood sugar levels and you have to juggle your Insulin dosage and carbs in order to stay healthy while you exercise. I'm also hoping to improve my general health and fitness by taking part. One million steps between 1st July 2018 and 30th September 2018 which is the equivalent of covering the distance of 19 marathons, 500 miles and the equivalent of walking from Dover to Edinburgh!
