Soooooooo I've entered Ironman UK 2016!!!!
An Ironman is a 2.4 mile open water swim (equivalent to 154 lengths in a standard pool) followed by a 112 mile bike ride, then the icing on the cake is to finish by completing a marathon at the end, a wonderful 26.2 miles!!! Oh and all this has to be done on the same day within 17 hrs!!
Some stats to put you in the picture as to where I'm starting from....
September 2015:
I’ve never done a triathlon before and I didn’t enjoy swimming or cycling!
My first swim I managed 14 lengths front crawl before I had to stop due to utter exhaustion!
My first bike ride was my first time riding a road bike, oh and my first time cycling on a road! I managed 12 miles!!!
My running distances were 3 miles at the time!
I do love a challenge but this is the biggest and hardest physical challenge I’ll ever do! I’m excited and nervous to take this on. I’d like to see how hard I can push my body physically and see if I am able to achieve something amazing!
If anyone has a few spare quid and thinks this effort may be worth a donation I’ll be raising money for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association. My little girl Millie, now 6yrs old was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis when she was 3 months old.
Tuberous sclerosis is a complex condition caused by an alteration in a gene. People with tuberous sclerosis have growths in different organs of the body (brain, heart, eyes, skin, kidneys, lungs) and may have epilepsy, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and kidney problems. Symptoms vary from one person to another with some people showing very few symptoms and others more severely affected. TS is the leading genetic cause of epilepsy and autism.
Millie was rushed into hospital at 3, 12, 13 & 20 months old following prolonged epilepsy seizures, many of these admissions have required her to be ventilated as she wasn’t breathing sufficiently by herself following the seizures. Millie has unfortunately spent time on high dependency and on intensive care.
Millie has growths on her kidneys and a tumour on her brain, they are non cancerous but can be very problematic. Millie has progressed well despite these set backs and had stayed seizure free for 3 years but unfortunately in September 2015 her seizures returned!
Millie is having roughly 90 mini focal seizures a month at the moment and we are still trying to find the right medication that will stop these.
In the world of TS Millie is definitely seen as one of the lucky ones despite all her history. Other kids are not so lucky and they and their families suffer in the most terrible ways.
All the money from my Ironman will go straight to the TS association to help them towards their vision of finding a cure for Tuberous Sclerosis and enhance the lives of people suffering with TS just like Millie.
I promise you from personal experience your donation WILL make a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! x
Thank-you so much Vicky, Ste, Millie & Dylan xx
