Anyone who knew Dave will know how much he loved being in the open air and will have heard all the tales – from walking up Scafell Pike with the Scouts even though he was only a young Cub, to outrageous climbing exploits as part of the Manchester University climbing club in the 70s. 

After moving to Norfolk, with its limited opportunities for climbing, he became a keen windsurfer in the 1980s, drawn to the chance to collect ever more pieces of expensive kit and enjoy a solo blast on the water on windy days. In the 90s he became a well-known figure at Hickling Broad, helping source funds for better equipment for beginners and training for instructors, before eventually becoming a windsurfing instructor in his 'retirement', working with novices and kids groups at Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre – where all remember him as a wonderfully patient and good humoured teacher. 

Many years of persuading his children and grandchildren up steep hills and into cold water on family holidays didn't dampen his enthusiasm for a good trek and he spent much of the last few years travelling in his van with his wife Judith, walking in the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, staying in the Scottish Islands and even taking an epic trip to the mountains of Patagonia and Nepal.

He often watched Outward Bound groups taking children out when walking in the Lakes and commented how great it was. As a strong believer in the importance of gaining practical skills and confidence through outdoor pursuits, he would love to think his memory was helping other children to have the experiences that he had and gave to so many others.
