Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Susanna, Sarah & Kim's JustGiving page.

None of us love running!  That's why this 10k is a genuine challenge and one that is requiring considerable effort - overcoming rain, mud, dodgy fitness levels, mad dogs and even broken arms! But that effort is nothing compared to the life-saving cancer research that is going on at the University of Southampton. That's why we are raising money to support their new Centre for Cancer Immunology and why we are asking for your support.

Cancer research couldn't be more important with one in two of us in the UK now being predicted to be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. Sadly, we all know people close to us that have been affected and we run in honour of them.  But we also run for the future patients that will benefit from the research that this new Centre for Cancer Immunology will enable. Cancer immunotherapy is literally saving lives and it's happening right here in Southampton.  It is a revolutionary new approach to cancer treatment that harnesses the power of the immune system to seek out and destroy cancer cells. It is offering new hope to patients, with trials at Southampton seeing 20% of cancer patients, with advanced and terminal cancers such as lung, skin and lymphoma, living cancer free.  They are on the cusp of exciting breakthroughs but there is still so much more to learn and do. Immunotherapy needs to reach and work for more people.

The new Centre, the first of its kind in the UK, will be situated at Southampton General Hospital and is planned to open in 2017. Through increasing resources, attracting world-leading scientists and housing state-of-the-art equipment, it will double the number of patient clinical trials, accelerate research progress and save more lives from cancer.

The University has already raised 75% of its £25 million target, with the current total standing at £18.5 million.  So plans are well underway. But they need more. Please support us and help them reach the target - every bit helps and we will all have contributed to a fantastic legacy.

You can find out more about the life-saving cancer research and the University's fundraising campaign at www.southampton.ac.uk/youreit. The campaign strapline is 'The cure for cancer? You're it' and it couldn't be more apt.  Thank you so very much your support.

Back to the painful running regime!
