On Saturday 12 June Mario, Dave, Joan, Jane, Wilson, Elton, Shephard, Colin and Patrick will bike London to Brighton to raise the cost of a scholarship for a young Zimbabwean of high potential to study at Mahindra UWC of India for two years. The student, who has already been selected is from a very poor background and would not otherwise have the means to access the standard of education that UWC can provide. For two years he will study for the IB diploma as well as partaking in extensive community service projects and cultural activities with his peers from up to 80 countries. When he graduates from UWC he will have access to guaranteed scholarship funding to attend a top university. Ultimately, our student wishes to become a Mechanical Engineer and return to Zimbabwe to improve failing infrastructure which is so crucial for development efforts.
The team will be led by Mario Konyen Joseph who was himself a recipient of a full UWC scholarship in 1998. Mario, who comes from Lorema in southern Sudan, was forced to flee to Kenya as a 12-year-old in order to escape the civil war there. Through Windle Trust, a charitable organisation that is also involved in refugee education, he was introduced to UWC representatives in Kenya and was selected to receive a scholarship based on his merit and potential. Mario, who now works for Windle Trust, wishes to give a student the same opportunity that UWC afforded him.
