Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit the JustGiving page of Pete Adams, Stewart 'Stu' Parfitt, Steve Smith and Tony Leighton

These are Daisies words... This is why we are raising as much money as we can to help find a cure and to make life easier for children living with Type 1 diabetes... Since writing her story Daisie has been diagnosed with Coeliac disease, which is the auto immune reaction to gluten (Gluten is in Wheat, Barley & Rye which are of course contained in bread, pasta, rolls, sauces). She has to stick to a careful gluten free diet as well as the challenge of Type 1

"My story...I was Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in August 2013 and when I was first told that I had a life threatening illness, I was very scared and didn’t know what would happen. I was told  I need to inject myself with something called insulin four times a day and it really hurts but I have to have them to keep me well, I do most of the injections myself. I also need to test my blood sugar levels regularly to check that they are o.k. I can’t eat sweets or any sugary foods like I used to because they will mess up my blood glucose levels. However too much insulin or not enough food can make my levels go low and that’s called a hypo. Hypo is short for hypoglycaemia and having one is really scary because I go shaky, hot, and dizzy and feel very weak. If its not treated I could end up in a diabetic coma. We need to make sure I have the right amount of food and insulin each day to avoid my blood sugar levels going high or low. When they’re quite high that is called a hyper and it makes me feel sick and have a headache. We need to treat it having more Insulin and drinking water. I have to have a total of 4 injections a day for the rest of my life and that means in my life I will have had over 96,000 needles in my body, plus I have to do a blood test by pricking my finger at least 4 times a day so that’s another 96,000 times! So that’s why I would love to raise enough money to find a cure for this horrible condition"

About type 1 diabetes:

•          Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening condition that has a life-long impact on those diagnosed with it and their families. JDRF exists to find the cure for type 1 diabetes.

•          Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition which cannot be prevented, and is not linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.  To many sweets or cakes DO NOT cause Type 1

•          People with type 1 diabetes rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive, until we find the cure.

•          It normally strikes children and stays with them for the rest of their lives.

•          Type 1 diabetes affects about 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of them children.
JDRF is the type 1 diabetes charity, improving lives until we find the cure. We fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.

You cannot prevent it by adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, or living a healthy lifestyle. There is currently no knowType 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but is most commonly diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s.  With this type of diabetes, a person’s pancreas produces no insulin.  It occurs when the body’s own defense system (the immune system) attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. What causes the immune system to do this is not entirely known. People with type 1 diabetes must inject insulin several times every day. But JDRF is committed to funding research that will find the cure.
