Story

Nottingham artist Tory Hayward will decorate a hundred eggs using a traditional Ukrainian technique during an artist’s residency at Nottingham City Arts.

This fundraiser is for those who would like to support this project by donating to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine appeal.

Pysanky is an ancient folk art using wax resist and dyes to create intricately decorated eggs. One Ukrainian legend tells that the concept of evil exists as a dreadful cave-dwelling serpent. For every pysanky written, the serpent’s chains tighten, and good triumphs for another year meaning evil cannot roam free in the world. The very act of decorating or ‘writing’ each egg is therefore a hopeful act.

The pysanky eggs will be sold on a separate platform to raise funds and will be available for buyers to collect from City Arts (Nottingham) at the end of the exhibition in September 2022.

******

Intense conflict in Ukraine is threatening the lives and livelihoods of civilians across the country, causing millions to flee. Homes have been destroyed. Essential services have been hit. Families have been separated. People have been injured. Lives have been lost. DEC charities and their local partners are in Ukraine and across the border in the neighbouring countries. They are working to meet the immediate needs of all people fleeing with food, water, medical assistance, protection and trauma care. £30 could provide essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month. £50 could provide blankets for 4 families to keep them warm. £100 could provide emergency food for two families for one month.
