Alice & Livi run 2500th Athens Classic Marathon, 2010
Fundraising for Medair UK
In 490B.C. the Greek soldier Pheidippides ran from a battlefield at the town of Marathon to Athens without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming "Νενικήκαμεν" ('We have won')… before collapsing and dying!
On this momentous 2500th anniversary year, we are taking on the challenge of running the Athens Classic Marathon, the exact route Pheidippides ran (with 2.2 miles tacked on the end so the queen could see the marathon when the event came to London). We’re hoping not to die in the process(!), though we do have a slight advantage over Pheidippides: we’re not planning to fight a battle beforehand, we’ll be wearing uber-stability trainers with blister-prevention socks (as opposed to leather sandals) and we’ll be given trusty Lucozade every 5 miles! As it’s the 2500th anniversary we’re aiming to raise £2,500 for Medair who work with the world’s most vulnerable people affected by natural disasters, conflicts and crises in Afghanistan, Congo, Haiti, Madagascar, Somalia, Sudan and Zimbabwe. Please see www.medair.org for more info. Any support you can give, even £10, would be hugely appreciated!* Charities pay a small fee for our service. Find out how much it is and what we do for it.
