Story
Childhood is a time of limitless possibilities. And old age is the time of wisdom.
But for children who face the monster of cancer, their lives are fast-forwarded, unwittingly, into profound wisdom.
The Children fighting this deadly cancer are some of the bravest souls you will ever have the privilege of knowing. Each child has endured more pain, again and again on a daily basis, more disruption to their innocent tender lives than many of us might experience in a lifetime, that only their parents can bear witness to. The strength and perseverance each display as they battle this relentless cancer is an inspiration to all whose lives they touch., they face it with unflinching, raw truth and courage, a courage that humbles us again and again. For them, life is hard-won yet full of incredible hope.
Approximately 120 children a year are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. It is the second most common solid tumor in infants. Most children are diagnosed by 21/2 years of age. Up to sixty percent of them have high risk disease that has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body) on diagnosis. High risk children diagnosed before age 5 have about a 20% chance of surviving. For children over age 5, the prognosis is even worse.
On the 16th June 2010, a team of 20 members of the Metropolitan Police Service will walk the Lyke Wake Walk to raise awareness and funds for some of these children through J.A.C.K Foundation (Joining Against Cancer in Kids) and Neuroblastoma (Childrens Cancer) Alliance.
The Lyke Wake Walk involves the complete crossing of the North Yorkshire Moors, starting at Scarth Wood Moor near Osmotherley at 3am and finishing 16 hours later on the east coast at Ravenscar. The challenge is a 40 mile (64 km) walk; climbing 5,000 feet (1,500 metres), with the highest point being Round Hill / Botton Head (1,489 feet / 454 metres) which the team will strive to achieve within 16 hours.
Take a minute to look at the attached photos of Adam, Sophie, Jack and Jacob. Jack and Jacob fought bravely, but they they lost their battle last year. For every child lost, another is diagnosed. Research needs funding, and every penny matters. Anything is possible.
