Story
So, in a recent moment of weakness* / stupidity* / inspiration* / delusion* (please delete as you feel appropriate) I signed up to run the BUPA 10km for Barnardo’s on Monday 31st May 2010.
This means that, rather than spending this rare and to be cherished additional day off that we know as ‘Spring Bank Holiday’ resting, or otherwise recovering from the obligatory Sunday night over-indulgence that is unavoidable on these occasions, I will instead be sweating my way around 10km of central London. But I am doing this all for a good reason, and that reason is Barnardo's.
Barnardo's is one of the 's largest children's charities and an extremely worthwhile cause. Working directly with over 100,000 children, young people and their families in 415 projects across the , Barnardo's offers services in the areas of disability, homelessness, fostering and adoption, child poverty, education, sexual abuse and exploitation, substance misuse, domestic violence, advocacy, family support, children in care and support for young carers.
Below is an indication of what your donations could do to change a child's life:
£50 could buy two bubble tubes for a multi-sensory room, enabling disabled children to play
£100 could provide clothing for an abused girl, helping her to feel like an ordinary teenager
£240 could pay for a year's worth of group sessions for four young people whose parents misuse drugs and alcohol
So please, please, please take a moment to give whatever you can for this worthy cause. Whether 50 pence or £5, with 94 pence of every £1 donated going directly to Barnardo's work with children and young people, you really can make a difference. Just select the 'Donate now' button below to make a quick and secure donation online.
The race itself goes through city centre and, presented by the marathon, it will trial a potential course for the 2012 Olympic long distance events. It should be a great event for both runners and spectators alike, so if you are in that weekend, then please come and watch - but no cameras please!! Thanks in advance to all for sponsoring me - it really is appreciated.Abi
