Story

UPDATE **Due to Covid 19, this week had to be postponed until March 2022, but I will still be taking up my place as a buddy then. In the meantime, I am working with SWV on their 'virtual' ski week, to learn more about the work they do and the programmes they offer their injured veterans. As well as this I will be connecting with some of the veterans virtually, many of whom are very isolated during these times and offering what support I can.**

I feel honoured to have been selected to be a 'Ski Buddy' for the 2021 Veterans Ski Week, which is organised by Supporting Wounded Veterans (SWV). I will be part of their team of buddies, supporting 26 wounded veterans over a week of 'skihabilitation', and would like to raise as much as possible for this wonderful charity.

Before you click on... this is not a ski holiday! A long way off...

As a 'retired' army wife, I feel eternally grateful that my husband returned from his various tours to Iraq and Afghanistan both physically and mentally unscathed. I appreciate every day how lucky I am, and have seen first hand some of his fellow soldiers, and their families, who have had to deal with, and continue to battle their injuries. With my children now at an age where I can start to do things for myself, I wanted to get involved with a project which sits very close to my heart.

The 'Skihabilitation' week in March takes place in the Swiss Alps, and marks the start of a long journey for these seriously injured personnel, to help them regain their fitness, self-confidence, and ultimately to return to employment. Many have never skied before, or even believed they could following their injuries. Depression, isolation and endless pain may have consumed their every day, but with this week, the charity aims to provide them with a new start. Following on from the ski week, mentoring, pain management, training and personal support from the charity aims to lead to long-term employment.

As a 'ski buddy', I will be paired up with one of the veterans for the week, to help them wherever needed and support the adaptive ski instructors. It may require gathering kit, helping them up from a tumble, providing a listening ear, or just letting them talk. I do hope, alongside this, I will be able to help provide them with a fun, unforgettable week.

I will be covering all my costs, and so 100% of your donation will go to the charity to fund their work. £14,200 is the total cost per veteran to cover the Ski Week and the ongoing programme of mentoring, pain management and employment advice. The success of the charity is incredible. 90% of the veterans who have worked with SWV are currently in employment.

Our wounded veterans have given so much to us, I feel it is our duty to give back to them, and help with their ongoing recovery. Please support as generously as you can.

Thank you so much xx
