Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

From the start of Dad's battle with Leukaemia in April 2019, all the staff at Hammersmith Hospital have been absolutely outstanding in the care, support and love that they gave to both Dad and us as a family.

In some instances, the staff became members of our family! Offering prayers and well wishes during Dad's most difficult and trying times.

We honestly have no words of thanks that are great enough to express our everlasting gratitude to all the staff on Daisy Ward, Frazer Gamble Ward, Dr Pavlu, Vee and all the hematology team as well as the Doctors and Nurses in the Intensive Care Unit who fought with Dad until the very end, and cared for him in the moments when even we as a family were unable to do so.

Dad contracted Covid-19 in April 2020 and lost his final battle 7 weeks later, just a week after his 70th Birthday no less! His fight came to an end in the early hours of a beautiful May morning, and was a devastating loss for all his friends and family.

Amidst the Covid Crisis, we as a family experienced first-hand just how hard the frontline NHS staff work every single day to fight both for and with the patients in an effort to save lives. No amount of words can describe the level of love and care that both the patients and their families receive, and we will be forever indebted to the team at Hammersmith ITU for looking after Dad and holding his hand in those final moments when we couldn't.

The numerous Zoom calls arranged by the nurses, and hourly updates received by the doctors were all that kept us close to Dad in those final few days, without which we would not have been able to 'be with' him in his last few hours.

Our gratitude and respect for all the staff is second to none, and putting their own emotions aside, they never failed to respect our thoughts and feelings during such a fragile time, and did everything in their power to ensure that both we and Dad were still together as a family, and that Dad was never alone and always comfortable .x.

For those who knew Dad, knew that he was a loving, kind-hearted and very generous man. In his memory we are raising funds to thank all the staff at Hammersmith Hospital, via the 'Friends of Hammersmith Hospital' charity ( Registered Charity No 209182). This organisation was established some 70 years ago, and strive to raise funds for both patients and staff at the hospital, helping to purchase much needed equipment and items that are not otherwise covered by the NHS budgets. We thank you all for your kind hearted donations to a cause that is so dear to us as a family, and hope that alongside the funds raised, you join us in praying for the good health and wellbeing of all frontline NHS staff, patients and families.

Warmest Regards, Vilkhu Family .x.
