We handcraft wishes to improve the lives of ill children

Story

At 5pm on Friday 22 June 2012, 10 fathers from  Fontmell Magna in North Dorset are setting out from the base of Ben Nevis to complete the Three Peaks Challenge. This will involve us climbing the three highest mountains in Great Britain – and following the Scottish peak, will see us climb Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales. We aim to achieve this within 24 hours.

What is inspiring us to do this? Apart from the satisfaction of getting ourselves fit and accomplishing this feat, we are raising money for a national charity based in Moordown, Bournemouth – The Round Table Children’s Wish charity. We have chosen this charity as one of team – Toby Langton-Gilks – has a son who has benefited from the great work that the charity does. Details below.

We are now seeking sponsorship for our expedition.

David Langton-Gilks and the Round Table Children’s Wish Charity, by his father Toby Langton-Gilks

In October 2007 our son David (11), was diagnosed with a large and aggressive brain tumour. He spent 6 weeks in Southampton General Hospital’s Children’s Neurological Ward recovering from two major operations to remove the tumour before having to begin a gruelling 15 month cancer treatment protocol.

At the beginning of his treatment, the nurses explained to David that because his cancer treatment was going to be very long and very hard, if he could have one wish come true at the end of his treatment, what would it be?

David wanted to go surfing.

The Round Table Children’s Wish made this dream come true for David four years after his fist diagnosis after two trips had to be cancelled as he was so ill.

The holiday was simply wonderful – the first time in four years we'd been able to really go on holiday properly as a family. The wish had been something for him to aim for when life was so terribly grim during his treatment and it helped us all to start to draw a line under a very harrowing time.

We are so very grateful to the Round Table Children's Wish for all they have done to help us and I'm really delighted to be able to have the opportunity to help raise some much needed funds for them, by playing a part in this forthcoming Three Peaks Challenge.

The Round Table Children’s Wish Charity – message from Samantha Read, Fundraising Officer to our group:

We are a National Charity, based locally in Moordown which is our only office.  We grant the wishes of children between the ages of 4 to 17 years of age who are suffering from a life-threatening illness. Our aim is to make the child’s wish come true to bring a bit of happiness and magic into their lives, when times have been particularly hard.  We have close links with Southampton Hospital who refer children to us and this often means we receive referrals for children in the Dorset/Hampshire area, however children all over the country are eligible to receive a wish with us and we do grant wishes in the UK and Ireland.  To find out more about some of the recent wishes we have granted please click the link to our “Wish Stories” page on our website http://rtcw.org/wish-stories.html
