I have this crazy theory that lard can be reduced by the use of altitude. Last September a group of us set off up to the top of Jbel Toubkal (13,671ft). The effects on me were insignificant and inconclusive.
This year in late November I am going to try again by taking the old body up to Everest base camp and Kala Patthar (18,192ft). The trek takes 8 days staying in teahouses along the way. The nightime temp drops down to -20c however by burning yak poo in the teahouses the temperature should rise to a pleasant -7c. We also have issues with mice, dodgy water and of course altitude as well as that the Sherpas will not consider the idea of a sedan chair for me! However the Himalayas is a place i have always wanted to travel since boyhood and eagerly await the adventure. Also i may be able to develop lard and altitude theory further!
I must thank my lovely wife Sandra and kids for allowing me away for such a long period and also dipping into the domestic accounts for my folly.
So to pay something back i would like to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research to which many of us lost a friend to. Andy Horton sadly passed away recently to this awful disease leaving his wife Denise and young daughter Grace.
If we could raise money to this very underfunded research to prevent, cure & improve the lot of sufferers and their families like the Hortons then it will be very worthwhile.
"Forty years ago few children survived childhood leukaemia
Now the survival rate is 80%
Forty years ago only 46% of women diagnosed with breast cancer survived five years or more
Now that figure is also 80%
Forty years ago 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survived five years or more
That figure is still 3%"
