My story
Hi All
With the trek now completed we are back home safe and sound. It was a wonderful adventure for us both and pleasurable as well as hard work. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great but we did get some lovely photo's which i will upload as soon as the site is working again.
After our little hiccup with trying to get out of Lukla due to the weather conditions we finally got a helicopter rescue and then made it home 1 week late.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind and generous donations to date. Catch up with you all soon. :-)
Ann
Hi All
I am booked to Trek the well known path from Lukla to Everest Base Camp all in pursuit of ‘madness’ and ‘why not’! This said, it is a personal challenge for me and I haven’t done anything like this before but I think I am quite looking forward to it, plus once I get a new hip at some point in the future, who knows if this would be achievable going forwards!
This idea was put in my head by a friend who has already completed it this year and when she mentioned it I thought, ‘why not’! I am doing this trek with my Aunt, a Guide and Sherpa so it will be a fantastic trip and at worst I’m hoping the Sherpa may be able to carry me and leave the bags, if all else fails! J The whole trip is fully funded by myself and my Aunt and we are booked to do this in October 2011, after the summer monsoons and hopefully when the weather is lovely and fresh and the sky is clear.
I have chosen the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) as my charity of choice as I suffer with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) myself which was diagnosed in 2002 following a bout of food poisoning! As you may imagine I was quite surprised to learn this but over the years and with different treatments I find that nowadays it is fairly under control with only a few problems with walking from time to time, hence the ‘madness’ bit!!! I hope that you will be able to give at least something to my charity of choice and I would like to explain that all donations go to the charity and this is not a charity organised trek. AS is a form of arthritis which generally affects the younger generations and as with all illnesses, it’s not always pleasant!!
Ankylosing means fusing together and spondylitis means inflammation of the bones of the spine (vertebrae). If you have ankylosing spondylitis, the bones in your spine become inflamed at the part where they attach to the tendons, and also at the joints between the bones. Your body then tries to mend the damage by producing new bone. As new bone grows, it can eventually cause them to fuse together. Although it usually starts in the spine, ankylosing spondylitis can affect any of your joints, especially your knees, hips, ankles and shoulders. You can develop ankylosing spondylitis at any time, but it usually starts between the ages of 15 and 35, with the average age being 24. About one in 200 men and one in 500 women in the UK have the condition.
Many thanks to all of you for taking note of this and a special thanks to all of you who have donated to another very worthy charity!
Ann J
