Story
On August 1st, my friends Rick and Stu and I will start from Land's End on a 2 week journey from the southern to northern tip of Britain.
As you'll know, I'm no great athlete, and our 70 mile training rides are painfully proving this. The challenge of repeating this distance on the hills of Cornwall, the Pennines and the Highlands for 17 days running brings tears to my thighs.
This will be a great adventure - but Rick, Stu and I would like some greater good to come from our efforts and have each chosen a charity to support.
When I was working with coffee farmers in Africa last year, one of the challenges I saw many people face was transport - whether for trade, school or health. I met farmers who would walk 30 miles or more in a day to take goods to the market. Or children who would walk 10 miles to get to school.
Transport and development go hand-in-hand. Simple, affordable transport generates wealth in developing countries, as well as saving lots of time and back-breaking work.
So I am raising money for Re-cycle http://www.re-cycle.org, a fantastic charity who collect secondhand bicycles in the UK and ship them to Africa. Re-cycle's partners in Africa distribute bikes and teach riders the skills to repair and maintain them. Its a simple idea, which fits my own belief that charity does the most lasting good when it provides people with the means to improve their own lives.
So far Re-cycle have shipped over 30,000 bikes to Africa. Your donation will help them to continue shipping bikes to enable people to lift themselves from poverty.
Please give generously and remember to add Gift Aid
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
