Haiti Appeal -
Haiti was hit by a destructive earthquake and has claimed the lives of thousands. Many relief units and UN missions have focused there attention on the city centre forgetting about the rural areas devastated. These areas are in the process of rebuilding.
After being extremely moved by the videos and images seen on TV, I have decided that I will go over to Haiti for two weeks to help from the 28 May 2010.
With your help I can raise as much money as possible to make a real impact on the lives of children in Haiti. The money will go towards building safer water units in the country and providing food supplies in what will be the mosoon season.
I will be volunteering with an amazing charity called Khalsa Aid they have set up a camp in the more remote areas of Haiti. The camp is working with other NGO's to provide a medical unit, orphanage and water sanitation projects. Khalsa Aid will be providing clean water to the thousands of survivors in these neglected areas. In the short term, Khalsa Aid is looking to provide safe drinking water through the use of tankers across the small villages and towns. Longer term, Khalsa Aid has determined that there is local knowledge of digging tube-wells to extract water from 90ft deep though many villagers have stated that the water is not clean enough and need a filtration system. This is similar to the work Khalsa Aid completed in Barisal, Bangladesh where water was delivered twice daily in which time natural water filtration systems were built.
It will take many years to rebuild this country but with help from all of us the death toll can be reduced.
