Fundraising for Southampton Hospitals Charity

We are raising money for the PLANETS (Pancreas, Liver and Neuro Endocrine Tumours) Charity (http://www.planetscharity.org) of which I am a proud medical team member. Approximately 50 people are attempting to complete the ride to Paris and we felt that if each of us raised at least £1000, we would make a huge contribution to the charity while taking part in an event that highlights the many strengths of the team in Southampton.
PLANETS was founded by my colleagues Neil Pearce and Brian Stedman and has to date raised over £400,000 in the fight against pancreatic, liver and neuroendocrine cancer. In fact, funds from the charity have been integral in Southampton becoming one of the few centres in Europe offering intra-operative radiotherapy for pancreatic cancers. PLANETS also helped support our team attaining a European Centre of Excellence award from the European Neuroendocrine Society and continues to support many smaller initiatives that go into making us one of the best places in the UK for the treatment of pancreatic, liver and neuroendocrine tumours.
I am doing this rather painful thing for quite a few reasons but there are two that I would like highlight specifically. This event honours and celebrates the patients that have been treated and are currently being treated by our collective teams in Southampton and Wessex. Some of those individuals and their families are in fact taking part in the event! We would not be the team we are without the feedback that we get from our patients. Secondly, I am very privileged to work with an astoundingly talented group of doctors and nurses and training for this event has gone even furthering in cementing our friendships and working relationships. This hard work has reaped dividends in our professional lives and will hopefully pull us through to that final ride down the Champs-Élysées!. Finally, I work in an institution that has been progressive, forward thinking and willing to take risks with the novel treatments that we have pioneered in Southampton. Laparoscopic (key hole) liver surgery and intra operative radiotherapy are just a few examples of many treatments that Southampton is a leader in the UK and Europe. This event will help raise awareness of the work we are doing.
