We raise funds for veterinary treatment to improve care of street dogs in Sri Lanka

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page

Animals inspire most of my artwork and I love being able to use my art to help raise funds for causes that are important to me. I first heard of WeCare Worldwide through Ben Fogle's TV show 'New lives in the wild'.

Janey Lewis, a vet, is an incredible human being who went backpacking to Sri Lanka in 2014 and was so appalled by the condition of the (over 3 million) street dogs (and cats) that she was determined to do something about it. With the help of Westway Veterinary Group she moved to Sri Lanka and founded a charity called WeCare Worldwide setting up a vet's practice to help as many of these animals as she could.

She began by vaccinating and neutering as many street dogs as possible, initially treating them at the side of the road or in her own home until eventually her home was full and she realised there was so much more to do as many of the animals had horrific wounds and injuries. She rented premises and set up a vet practice where she works with locals Malaka, Chaminda and Dr Nuwan and volunteers. You can read more about her inspiring story here:

I am in awe of the work Janey and her colleagues do under really difficult conditions and they rely entirely on donations to be able to continue helping these animals.

Now, with the strange new world we find ourselves living in, WeCare need help more than ever and I would love to do even a little bit to help by offering up a custom miniature pet portrait (painted on a little wooden key ring fob) as a prize for donating to my JustGiving Page. All you have to do is make a donation of £5 for 1 entry into the draw. (If you want to donate more then by all means do - you'll get 1 entry for every £5 donated!) Even if you don't have an animal companion, you can donate and give the prize to the animal lover in your life, if you win!

On 31 August 2020, I'll draw a winner who will win a portrait of their dog, cat or small furry. Just make sure you leave your full name and contact details for entry into the draw (if you donate anonymously I won't be able to enter you into the draw! ) Visit my Facebook page (Art By Nicola McLean) or my Instagram page (@Art.By.Nicola.McLean) on 31 August 2020 where I announce the name of the winner.

The prize is for a custom portrait in acrylic on a wooden key ring fob and I will cover postage costs wherever in the world the winner is so all it will cost you is the donation you make to help WeCare help more street dogs and cats.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

"WECare are going to save the world, one animal at a time!" Janey Lowes, very optimistic founding member of WECare Worldwide. We dream of providing healthcare for all animals in desperate need of help around the world. Yes, we know it's a big dream, but anything is possible when we all come together! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by Westway Veterinary Group, the largest veterinary practice in the North of England. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but initially will be concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We will also treat any sick or injured street dogs.
