I have been selected as an Outward Bound Mentor.  The Mentors are involved in all stages of the programme including a day’s training as ‘Volunteer Assistant Instructors’ and a day in the selected schools getting to know the young people through team building and communication activities. The Mentors attend a five day residential course at The Trust’s Aberdovey centre, working with the groups and their instructors to provide support and encouragement to the young people throughout their Outward Bound experience. The mentors are also challenged to raise a minimum of £500 each tocontribute to The Trust’s General Bursary Fund, initiating a whole range of fundraising challenges in their workplace and local communities; from sponsored runs to pub quizzes to dress down days and many more. Their successful fundraising efforts, matched by the DHL UK Foundation, helps to reach over 250 additional young people in need of financial assistance to participate in an Outward Bound experience.

Benefits to the Young People:

Raising Achievement. The programme raises the aspirations and ambitions of young people, improving attitudes

towards learning and behaviour at school and within the communities in which they live.

Developing ‘life skills’. The programme provides the young people with valuable opportunities for skills

development including team work, communication and leadership skills, as well as improving confidence and selfesteem.

Strengthening communities. Key to the programme is the integration of young people from different areas of the

UK, creating greater empathy and understanding of those from different backgrounds, cultures and circumstances,

helping to develop a realisation of the need for compassion and tolerance.
