Loch Ness Marathon and festival of running · 3 October 2010 ·

We support individuals, families, and groups with complex health and social care needs, often due to disability, dementia, autism or mental ill health. The support we and our dogs provide enables them to better access the world around them.

Story

Loch Ness is known for its monster. A marathon is a monster challenge. So I thought that the Baxter’s Loch Ness Marathon was a marriage made in heaven. It is also meant to be an easy course, if a marathon could ever be considered a walk in the park! As this is my first marathon I thought that it would be perfect. I would not have to worry about over heating in October in Scotland. This year has not been one of the best I have ever had, family health issues and a relationship breakdown has meant that I want to remember 2010 for something special. So I thought that running a marathon would be a good idea. I have always wanted to complete a marathon. I don’t really like the training but my running partner is much more motivated than I am which spurs me on.

Baxters Loch Ness Marathon
Recognised as one of the UK's leading marathons, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon follows a spectacular point-to-point route through stunning Highland scenery, along the south-eastern shores of Loch Ness, and then crosses the River Ness to finish along the river at Bught Park.

The Marathon starts at 10.00am on Sunday 3 October 2010 between Fort Augustus and Foyers on the south side of Loch Ness, and will finish along the River Ness at Bught Park.

The Route
The Marathon will start on the high ground between Fort Augustus and Foyers (B862) and will drop down to the banks of Loch Ness at Foyers (B852). From there, the route follows the loch's south eastern shore, heading north east towards Dores on the northern tip of the loch. From Dores, the race heads directly into the centre of Inverness (B862), turning left over the main road bridge and left again for the last half mile along the River Ness to the finish at Bught Park.
