Seedy Cycles: Coventry to Amsterdam

Seedy Cycles is raising money for Re-Cycle (Bikes to Africa)
“Euro Bike Trip - Coventry, UK to Amsterdam, NL”

on 3 February 2012

We collect used bicycles in the UK and we ship them, in containers, to people who need them in Africa. Some people living in rural African communities walk miles everyday to reach water, school, work or healthcare. Bikes are a sustainable mode of transport and help change lives for many families.

Story

This coming Easter, in a quest of epic vision and valiant attempt, comes the new Seedy Cycle motion picture – 'Bike Hard, Play Hard'. The conclusion of this dramatic story should see the credits rolling in the Dutch capital Amsterdam – where we aim to bike to within ten days. The plot should see us leave Coventry city and sail over a titantic distance of 500 miles where upon we pass through such luxurious scenes such as Bruges, Antwerp, Rotterdam and (hopefully) Amsterdam. We are doing this grand-scale trip not only for our collective passion of biking, but also in the name of British charity 'Re-Cycle' – an organisation that collects and ships bikes to donate to multiple African countries. The value of this form of transport in developed countries may be overlooked, but ultimately the simple culmination of metal and rubber is HUGELY beneficial to remote villages and towns across Africa; they are substantially aided by this mechanism of travel where the luxuries of buses and trains are, quite figuratively, thousands of miles away.

In the words of Re-Cycle themselves: “People spend hours each day walking to collect water, firewood or to access health care, school and employment. A bicycle lightens this burden and dramatically improves their well-being as well as work and education opportunities helping to bring social change. A bicycle cuts travel time to a fraction and can carry passengers and heavy loads. Bikes give families the extra time to earn, learn and enjoy life.“

With one of the Seedy Cycle members having seen the charity in action in Ghana (a place where they have so far donated almost 16,000 bikes), it really can't be understated that a donation, no matter how big or small, DOES make a difference. Any money given will go straight to helping Re-Cycle ship another shipping container filled with donated second hand bicycles from the UK to Africa - this shipment will give about 400 people access to clean and affordable transport in some of the world's poorest countries.

So please join us this Easter with your support! Any and all donations are welcomed with open arms. The site is perfectly secure and safe to donate to; and at the end of the day, a bike in a third-world country goes further than that of a paid taxi at the end of a night-out. Literally.

Thank you for reading.

*Seedy Cycles consists of Michael Barnes, 20; Ryan Millward, 20; Joe Waterfield, 20 and Sean O'Donnell, 20.
