Event: Women for Women International March of Peace 2013, from 8 July 2013 to 11 July 2013

Story

Ever since I visited Srebrenica for the first time in 2009 (read my blog from the trip here), I have wanted to challenge myself and join the March for Peace in Bosnia and join the people who want to ensure that we remember what happened – to ensure it never happens again.

20 years ago 200,000 people died during the conflict in the Bosnia, 8,000 alone in the space of 5 days in the genocide at Srebrencia in 1995. Only maybe 3,000 of those have actually been buried because many bodies have to literally be pieced together from different mass graves and sites. Every year on the 11 July, bodies that have been found during that year are buried in a ceremony at Srebrenica. A march for peace also takes place every year - a three-day trek from Nezuk near Tusla to Srebrenica (120km) retracing the route followed by the refugees of the war as they tried to escape the massacre – it ends in Srebrenica in time for the ceremony.

So I am doing it, this July I will be travelling to Bosnia and joining thousands of people from Bosnia and around the world to remember and to say ‘Never Again’ and to raise money for Women for Women International in Bosnia. And I need your help please – every donation will go directly to helping women and their families in Bosnia. And please tell others about the Peace March. Thank you!

About the charity

Women for Women International supports women who live in some of the world’s most dangerous places. Women enrol on the charity’s year-long training programme, where they learn how to earn and save money, improve their family’s health and make their voices heard at home and in their community.
