Warwick Jailbreak, the biggest student event of its type in the UK, is set to return on November 1-2.

The students taking part have 36 hours to get as far away from the University of Warwick as they can without spending any money.

Participants aim to raise as much money as possible for Worldwide Cancer Research(WCR), an international cancer research charity. The team is aiming to break its previous record and raise more than £30,000 for the charity.

Sian Elvin, media officer at Warwick Jailbreak, said: “It’s the 10th anniversary of Warwick Jailbreak this year and we’re going to celebrate this fantastic milestone by making 2014’s event bigger and better than ever.

“Previous winners have made it as far as Lithuania, Los Angeles, Vancouver and even Bangkok – how far will the students get this year? We can’t wait to find out, and along the way try and smash 2013’s fundraising total for an absolutely brilliant cause.”

A Guinness World Record attempt is taking place on the morning before the event begins, which is to get more than 304 people in a single pair of underpants!

WCR funds research into any type of cancer anywhere in the world, and supports some of the world’s most diverse and unexpected projects to gain a global perspective. The cure for cancer will never be discovered by one scientist in one laboratory.

Anna Howarth, student fundraising coordinator at WCR, said: “Thank you to everyone that has signed up to Warwick Jailbreak so far; the money you will be raising by participating in this fantastic event will be funding cutting-edge research into cancer.

“This means that you will not just be taking part in an incredibly fun adventure, you will effectively be saving lives. For this, we cannot thank you enough.”

Students, who will be travelling in groups of between two and four, hope that members of the public will be generous in offering lifts even a short distance to help participants in their aim of escaping campus, the West Midlands, and eventually the country.

They can also attempt to gain free tickets on public transport if they so wish.

The event will begin at 10am on Saturday 1 November, and end at 10pm on Sunday 2 November.
