Story
A group of 43 cyclists who work for BP will cycle from the west to the east coast of Scotland at the end of May. Riders will start in Ullapool and finish in Aberdeen. There will be an off-road and a road team. The total distance is a gruelling 220 miles over three days with many challenging hills to climb. Why are they doing this? Primarily to raise funds for three very deserving charities ( MND Scotland, UCAN and Butterfly FoRest) which rely on donations for their valuable and much needed work.
MND Scotland provides support, care and research for sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease. This is hereditary disease that is fatal. It attacks the nervous system and there is currently no cure. The disease is relatively uncommon and life expectancy is short. For these very reasons funding is a challenge. Ian Bowen suffers from MND. Ian worked for BP as a Drilling and Petroleum Engineer for 28 years. He retired from BP and was diagnosed with MND 3 years ago. Ian worked until January 2009 when he was no longer able to continue. Ian is now confined to his home and frequently requires a ventilator to assist his breathing. Ian describes the reasons to support MND Scotland are because it provides valuable support services for MND sufferers and their families, raises awareness and promotes research to understand MND and to find a cure.
